Films

Here, I will review films that are related to microbiology and infectious disease. If you have any tips, please let me know too. Fiction and non-fiction, Hollywood or Bollywood, are all welcome.

Pandemics (2007)
This is a miniseries about virus spread from Australia to the US and the rest of the world. It was started by a boy who died in a flight to the US. The passangers, among which also a con (a la COn Air of Nicholas Cage) were qurantained. However some of them escape where this con was released with help of his companion. The medical part of this movie was good where the terms such as antigenic drift and shift were used. The CDC was widely involved and it sounds all quite real. Also, one thing: Tamiflu does not work against the virus described in this movie.

World War Z (2013)
Brad Pitt (playing Gary Lane) was a former field scientist for WHO (yes... yes..., microbiology is an interesting field for sexy males and females!) and was a witness of zombies who chased human. Interestingly, the human bitten by the zombies turned into zombie too. With a help from another WHO worker, Brad and his family was evacuated from the cities where the zombies were in amok. But, Brad needs to find the cause of this 'disease' together with an Harvard professor and guided by the best specialist force in the world the Seals. The young Harvard professor hypothesis was that the 'infection ' was caused by a virus (well done...). Interestingly indeed (like in the real world), they went to find an 'index case'. The journey brought them to South Korea, Israel and end up in Wales. In Wales, Brad found out that the zombie will not attack people with disease, analogy to that pathogens will only try to find an healthy host. Btw, next to the ID en CM stories, the movie is a very nice action movie with great images...
