Sputum and respiratory samples

Preanalysis
- Get the best sample, meaning as deep as possible. Morning sputum is for example very good.
- Other samples can be originated for example from bronchoalveolar lavage.

Analysis
- Sputasol is added to the specimens to liquify the samples.
- The sputum can be plated on MSA (for S. aureus), McConkey (for Gram negative), and Hemophilus agar (universal agar).
- Between all the normal mouth flora (coagulase negative staphylococci, Streptococcus viridans, brukholderia, Captnocytophaga) you need to find pathogens: Moraxella catarrhalis (Gram negative cocci), Haemophilus influenzae and Streptococcus pneumoniae.
