Sonication and microcalorimetry in diagnosing breast implant infection

- We  use sonication and microcalorimetry in diagnosing necrotizing fasciitis in a young lady with bilateral breast implants.
- She had cellulitis of the breasts which enlarged rapidly within hours.
- The breast implants were removed.
- The removed breast implants were subjected to sonication and microcalorimetry.
- Within 2 hours, the microcalorimetry was positive for the presence of microorganims (vs. 1 day for positive culture of fluid recovered around the implants).
- She was treated with antibiotics with good response.
- This paper is published in AJCP.
